Practice the pace you can sustain

Three minutes gives you room to notice more than your fastest stretch. An eager opening can feel different from the pace you hold in the middle of a session. Begin comfortably and aim for even inputs, rather than spending the first few words trying to get ahead of the timer.

Use the opening minute to settle your hands. Through the second minute, focus on reading the whole next word before typing it. During the final minute, keep the same deliberate rhythm. Rushing as time runs out can introduce errors that interrupt an otherwise smooth attempt.

Use the result to choose one drill

Review your WPM and accuracy together. The speed chart shows how your cumulative pace developed; it can help you notice an uneven start or a later slowdown. It cannot tell you why a change happened, so connect it with what you noticed while typing. Were you reaching for an unfamiliar key, repairing mistakes, or losing your place?

Choose one pattern and practice it with a short Custom passage. For repeated letter mistakes, follow the accuracy guide. If your movements feel reliable but hesitant, try the focused routine in how to type faster. Change only one thing before your next comparison.

Keep your comparisons meaningful

Compare three-minute attempts with similar punctuation, numbers, and equipment. A more demanding word mix can change your result even when your technique is improving. The scoring guide explains the character-based formula and why corrected mistakes still affect accuracy.

Take a short break between longer attempts. Use the one-minute test when you want a quick check, or try five minutes when this duration feels comfortable. Beginners can also use fixed word counts on the home page to practice without aiming to finish before a deadline.
